Happy Winter Solstice!!

I just want to remind everyone who dislikes winter as much as I do, that today is the winter solstice. And that means that from now on, the days start getting longer again. HOORAY!! Summer is coming. (This brings me joy on the first official day of winter.)

Thanksgiving

What's the best part of Holidays? Family, of course. I was lucky enough to be able to spend Thanksgiving with every member of my family. That doesn't happen too often. And even more amazing, no arguments! Above is a picture of our family "Turkeybowl" game. That was the only event I remembered to bring my camera with me. So, I'll post more pictures when I get some from family members. (I'm so lame!!) Leah and Matt and their 3 kids were nice enough to stay with us. I think my children would have revolted if they had stayed anywhere else. I wish I had a picture of them all sacked-out in their sleeping bags on the floor together. Anyway, I hope your holiday was happy too.

Pumpkin Cookies

Gretchen shared this recipe with me, and I thought I'd put it on my blog because it is SOOOOO easy. And also quite tasty.

Pumpkin Spice Cookies

Ingredients:
1 spice cake mix*
1 15 oz. can pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
1 cup mini chocolate morsels (optional)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 F. Stir together cake mix and pumpkin until smooth. Add chocolate chips if desired. (I used a 2 tsp. scoop to make the cookies pictured.) Bake for 8-10 minutes. Makes 6 dozen cookies.
Optional: When cooled, frost with cream cheese frosting.

*Just a note. Don't make the spice cake per the recipe on the box. For these cookies it's just the cake MIX and the pumpkin. ~Yeah, it's that easy!

Congratulations Matt!!!

This is my brother-in-law, Matt. I just wanted to congratulate him on finishing Chemo today. I know it's been a hard year. We're so thankful that you all moved closer to us. We can't wait to see you in a couple weeks! I asked Leah if I could send you something as a congratulations gift and she suggested a baseball cap with a fake ponytail sewed on the back. How do you put up with that Matt? We'll have to take you and Leah out to dinner or Fax will take you golfing sometime, because I'm having a really hard time finding that baseball cap. We love you Matt!!

Look what I woke up to this morning :(

I suppose it's that time of year again. It's not my favorite, but I'm trying to be more positive and less grouchy about it. Anyway, here are a few pictures for those interested:
Jake and Summer with the first snowman of the season.

P.S. If anyone is interested I also updated my playlist with a selection of seasonal favorites. If you have any requests of songs to add, just let me know and I'll see what I can do!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

I personally don't like Halloween, but for some reason my kids love it! (Hard to figure out, isn't it?) Andy, Christy, Wynn, and Gracie came up for trick or treating. I think everyone had a good time. I broke with tradition this year and handed out glow sticks instead of candy. Anyway, here are some pictures.

Pumpkinland!

Well it just so happens that my week for preschool was also the week of Halloween. So on Tuesday we went to Pumpkinland. There's a corn maze, a pumpkin patch, and lots of farm animals for the kids to see. Then the kids get to pick out a pumpkin to take home when we leave. We had a good time.

Satan!

Yesterday Summer had one of her friends over to play. Her name is Alexia. She says some pretty funny things. Here is what she said yesterday while we were decorating sugar cookies:
Alexia: One time I slept outside in the backyard with my brothers and sister. At first I was scared. I thought Satan was going to come and get me. But the gate was closed.
Fax was home too and we laughed and laughed. (I hope all my gates are closed.)

Mmmm..........SALSA!

It took me a while, but I think I finally figured out a salsa recipe that is as good (or close) to Los Hermanos salsa. I especially like this recipe because most of the ingredients you can keep in your pantry. So you don't have to have fresh tomatoes, etc. to make it. (Leah, I know you already have this recipe, so you can disregard this post!) Anyway, if any of you are interested here it is:

Los Hermanos Salsa

Ingredients:

1 (14 1/2 ounce) can tomatoes and green chilies (drained)
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can whole canned tomatoes (drained)
2-3 tsps. jalapeno (canned, diced, not pickled)
1/2 medium yellow onion (quartered)
3/4 teaspoon garlic salt (don't use garlic powder)
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/4 teaspoon sugar
Juice from 1/2 lime
1/4 bunch cilantro (more or less to taste)

Directions:

Combine everything in blender and blend until desired consistency. Place in covered container and chill. Chill for at least 6 hours to blend and enrich the flavors. Serve with your favorite thin corn tortilla chips. Makes about 3 cups. (If you leave out the cilantro it tastes more like Chili's salsa. But I like the cilantro.)

Guacamole

Mash 2 ripe avocados. Mix in 1/2 cup of salsa (more or less to taste), 1/8 - 1/4 cup homemade ranch dressing, and 1 Tbsp. lime juice. Salt to taste.

Anyway, if you have about 4 minutes give it a try. It really only takes that long.

Good-bye Garden. I'll miss you.

Blackberries before and after. (Thank you huge bumblebees!!)
So, one of my favorite parts of spring is getting my smallish garden ready to be planted. Then planting, and slowly-but-surely seeing all our little plants get bigger. And, of course, harvesting. (I'm not sure there is anything as tasty as corn picked from your own garden. Maybe blackberries picked from your garden.) What is my least favorite part? No, not pulling weeds. No, not dealing with various insects. My least favorite part is the first frost that comes and kills all my hard work. Last year I was picking tomatoes in November. This year I have not been so lucky. It snowed Sunday morning and we had hard frosts the last two nights. I have one tomato plant that is pretty sheltered and some of it survived, but everything else is dead. (At least we have grocery stores, right?) That's how it goes when you live somewhere with seasons. Anyway, that's enough lamenting for one post. Here are some pictures that I took this year of my garden. It's only October and I already miss summertime.

Tomorrow I will take a picture of my garden and post what it looks like now. (So sad looking.)

I know this is a boring post for most. But I really like gardening. I even enjoy mowing my lawn and making sure it's weed-free. So I totally understand if no one wants to comment. (And that is not a solicitation for comments!!)

Jake is 7!!

Well, Jake's birthday was almost 2 weeks ago and I'm only now posting his pictures. For the last 2 weeks we've had major problems with our internet. But yesterday we switched companies and now it's working way better than it ever has before! (Hooray! No more Qwest!) So here are some pictures of Jake's birthday celebration. We went to Tucano's for Jake's birthday dinner (per Jake's request) and the Moulders and Neweys came along too. There are no pictures of presents because Jake got to go pick out a new bike for his birthday. So there weren't any presents to unwrap. (I know, boring. But awesome too if you're the parent that has to purchase and wrap all the presents.) So, without further delay,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAKE!!!
WE LOVE YOU!!

Getting Ready for School

Today I went on a fabulous field trip to Aspen Grove with Jake and the other first graders. If I had remembered my camera I would post some pictures. Anyway, I couldn't take Summer so I arranged for her to hang out with her Aunt GG (Gretchen). No big deal, right? She loves Gretchen. She asks me on a daily basis if she can go to her house while I go shopping or something. But this morning she was not feeling it. She screamed and cried that she didn't want to go and that I was being mean. We talked it over for a good 5-10 minutes and she clearly understood, but at the same time did not care. When she started screaming at me I escorted her to her bed and then went out and shut the door so that I wouldn't have to listen to it. She, of course, continued to scream, "I'M NOT GOING!! I'M NOT GOING!!" Now, I had a lot to do this morning. Four lunches to make, four people to get ready, pick up for carpool, and make it to school on time. Every mom knows what I'm talking about. So then Summer got a job. Because at our house if you make more work for Mom (who already has enough of her own) then you get to help with some of it. That's when the anger hit the fan and Summer screamed at me, "YOU ARE NOT MY FAVORITE MOMMY ANYMORE!!!" I was laughing so hard I couldn't do anything. I had clear recollections of Kaleb at a similar age screaming at Gretchen, "I'M NOT GONNA BE YOUR MOMMY ANYMORE!!!" Anyway, eventually she pulled it together. Fax was nice enough to take her to Gretchen's house so I didn't have to repeat all of that at her house, and Jake and I were off on the field trip. Plus, Kaleb is now a fabulous 15 year old, so I'm not too worried about Summer. I just hope I can hold it together that long.

Memory Lane

I've been sorting through old cds that weren't labeled and I've found some very cute pictures of my kids. So I thought I'd share some of my favorites.
Jake, June 2003.

Kessa and Brook at their ballet recital. May 2003
Kate, Jake, and Brook enjoying the sunshine. July 2003
Brook and Jake enjoying the first snow of the season.
November 1, 2003
Summer, October 2004.
Well, I hope you enjoyed them. It's sad when kids grow up, but it would also be sad if they never did. At least now I won't be on the bottom of everyone's lists for who has recently blogged.

Happy 11th Anniversary!

I want to wish Fax and Me a very Happy Anniversary today! It sure doesn't seem like it's been 11 years. There are a lot of freaks out there, and I'm glad I got one of the sane ones. I love you, Fax! For our anniversary we are going to see James Taylor on Monday. Since we met at his concert 12 years ago, it's a tradition that we go whenever he comes. We've seen him in:
  1. 1996, in Park City (where we met)
  2. 1998, in Salem, Oregon
  3. 2001, at the E Center in Salt Lake (This show kind of sucked because I gave birth to Jake the next day, ~that part was okay, but no woman that pregnant should have to sit in a seat that small for 3-1/2 hours!) And thank goodness my water didn't break 12 hours earlier than it did.
  4. 2003 at the Usana Ampitheater (this is a very nice venue)
  5. 2005 at the Usana Ampitheater (Where Fax got James to sign one of my CDs!!)
  6. soon to be 2008 at the Usana Ampitheater. (Where hopefully we'll get him to sign something for Leah.)
I don't expect any of you to really care about any of this, but there it is anyway.

AND.......
Happy Birthday Gracie!!!

Your birthday is easy to remember because you were born on our 10th anniversary. We love you! (Look at those beautiful blue eyes!!!!)

Happy Birthday Summer!!

Wednesday morning we all awoke to Summer screaming, "Today I'm 4 years old!!" We had all the family who was in town over for some cupcakes and ice cream. Summer had a great time, and we hope everyone else did also. I think our house is getting smaller because there seems to be less and less room at every family gathering here. Today Summer said, "Do I get a slide show too? From my birthday party?" The reply was of course, "Absolutely!" So before I head to bed I've got to get this up so she can see it tomorrow.

Andy Bizarro

Fax and I went to Cafe Rio in Draper on Saturday night. (We were on our way home from a wedding reception.) Anyway, as we were waiting in line Fax says, "Look at that guy in line behind us, he is totally Andy Bizarro." Sure enough it was. Anyway, he ended up sitting at the table next to us so Fax held is camera phone up to his ear like he was talking to someone and I looked at the screen until Andy Bizarro was in view. Then Fax took his picture. I know it's lopsided, but if you tip your head to the left you will see just how much they look alike. Love you Andy!! We would have rather had you and Christy at dinner with us than your bizarre look-alike. (Click on the picture to get an up-close look.)

Happy Father's Day!

I hope everyone had a great Father's Day. We did. This is a picture of Fax and Summer asleep on the couch Saturday afternoon. Fax had just gotten back from work, and we had just gotten home from the pool. They look pretty comfy, huh?

Day at the Pool!

Tomorrow we're going to the Lehi pool. Kessa is even coming with us and the kids are very excited. Anyway, Mom wouldn't go because she said she doesn't want to get into her swimsuit. She also said that I would probably take a picture of her in her swimsuit at the pool and put it on my blog. Now I ask you.....does she have anything to be self conscious about? I think she looks fabulous. We'll miss you at the pool Mom!!! LOVE YOU!! (I hope you'll still speak to me after posting this! Pretty funny though, huh?)

Happy 9th Birthday Brook!!!

On June 6th, Brook turned 9 years old. That first year of life seems to take so long. And then after that time just flies. I think it's because you actually sleep through the night after that. Anyway, it got me thinking that 9 years from now Brook will be getting ready to start college. That's crazy. It all happens so fast. So Fax and I went out to lunch with Brook on her birthday, and on Saturday we had a big family party. There were a lot of pictures, so I decided to combine them into another slide show. I hope your not sick of my crazy blogging marathon.

First Week of Summer Vacation

Well, our first week of summer vacation was not the best. Jake and Summer had the croup and a fever until Thursday. We were up all hours of the night giving Jake his inhaler, ice water, and anything else to help him breathe easier and stop his barking cough. Here are some pictures of the sickies asleep. (Thank goodness for Advil and steroids.)
Jake, asleep in my bed. Why do kids always sleep better in Mom and Dad's bed?Summer always falls asleep on the couch when she's sick.

Dance Festival

May 28th was our school's dance festival. Brook and Jake were very excited about it. Jake danced to, "The Boot Scootin' Boogy" and Brook danced to, "When the Sun Goes Down." I think they had a lot of fun. And fortunately the weather cooperated too. Here are some photos:

I had a better vantage point to take pictures of Jake. He was right in the front. (And he really got into it.) I don't have as many good pictures of Brook because she was behind other kids.
Brook and her friend, Emily.

First Nice Day of 2008!!

It seems like winter lasted way too long this year. As a mom I follow the rule that I grew up with: It has to be at least in the 70s to wear shorts, and at least in the 80s to play outside in the water. On May 17th it finally got into the 80s. We don't have a pool yet this year, so I turned on a very old sprinkler and the kids seemed to have a great time. Here are some pics:
